Church of Life Wisdom - our meeting guidelines

During every meeting of our humanist community, all members are expected to hold themselves accountable for these guidelines: 

Foster Kindness and Compassion 

Speak with empathy, especially when perspectives differ. Give others the benefit of their positive intent. Celebrate effort, honesty, and curiosity—perfection isn’t the goal. 

Ensure Everyone is Heard 

Practice active listening (hearing with understanding) without interrupting. Use a "share the air" mindset—speak, then make space for others. Honor quiet voices by inviting, not pressuring, contributions. 

Use First Names Only 

Titles (e.g., Dr., Rev., Mr./Ms.) are not used—we gather as equals in our online church. Roles may be acknowledged when helpful, but without status or hierarchy. Leadership is inspirational and facilitative, not directive; we lead by lifting others. 

Steer Clear of Politics and Polarization 

Political topics are only addressed when grounded in shared ethical values (e.g., justice, dignity, compassion), not party affiliations. Avoid slogans or language that may alienate others. Focus on building understanding, not winning debates. 

Practice Open, Constructive Dialogue 

Ask clarifying questions instead of making assumptions. Disagree respectfully—stating your case while avoiding diminishing others—and seek common ground. When tensions rise, pause and return to shared purpose. 

Stay Purpose-Driven 

Begin and end meetings with a grounding intention (e.g., reflection, gratitude). Regularly revisit group values to stay aligned. Encourage feedback and adapt over time—growth is part of the journey, especially as we transition to virtual services.
